Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is launching a new live sports streaming service that will cost viewers $9.99 U.S. per month.

The new live sports option will be tied to the company’s existing Max streaming service and offer consumers access to professional baseball, ice hockey, basketball, and U.S. soccer events. It will also air live NCAA men’s basketball games.

Called “Bleacher Report Sports Add-On,” the sports option is scheduled to launch on October 5 of this year and will be available to Max subscribers for free until a promotional period ends on February 29, 2024.

The $9.99 U.S. cost for the live sports option will be in addition to the $9.99 U.S. charged per month for the Max streaming service, bringing the monthly cost for a bundled package to $19.98 U.S.

Warner Bros. Discovery said the sports option aligns with its strategy of building around the popular Max streaming service, which includes content from HBO.

Live sports is widely viewed as a big area of expansion for streaming services.

Walt Disney Co. (DIS) is reportedly developing a streaming version of its ESPN sports network and plans to bundle it with Disney+.

Warner Bros. Discovery also recently announced plans to offer content from the CNN news network that it owns on the Max streaming service beginning September 27.

The stock of Warner Bros. Discovery has declined 12% over the last year and currently trades at $11.64 U.S. per share.
