Facebook users around the world have been locked out of their accounts for no apparent reason.
Many accounts have a message on them that reads: “Your Facebook account was disabled because it did not follow our Community Standards. This decision can’t be reversed.”
Meta Platforms (FB), the parent company of Facebook, said it is investigating the incident and that it may have been hit by hackers.
In a Tweet, Meta Platforms said: “We’re aware that some users are experiencing issues accessing their Facebook accounts and we are working to resolve them as quickly as possible.”
Cybersecurity has become a growing issue in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with U.S. President Joe Biden warning corporate America in recent weeks that Russian hackers are likely to step up attacks on U.S. companies and social media sites.
There have also been record hacks of cryptocurrency exchanges in recent weeks, with one hack making off with more than $650 million U.S. in digital assets.
Facebook has drawn the ire of Russian officials after the social media platform said it would allow posts from people calling for the death of Vladimir Putin and Russian soldiers. Facebook and other social media sites have been suspended in Russia since the invasion of Ukraine.
Shares of Meta Platforms are down 34% this year at $224.85 U.S. following disappointing earnings and weak forward guidance issued by the company.
