Twitter Blue Relaunched With Higher Prices For Apple Users

The Twitter Blue subscription service has been relaunched, but with a higher price for Apple (AAPL) users.

In a tweet, the social media company said users can now subscribe to the Twitter Blue service that allows people to edit tweets, upload high-definition videos, and get a blue checkmark verifying their account for $8 U.S. a month.

However, Twitter said that people using an Apple iOS will need to pay $11 U.S. a month for the same Twitter Blue subscription.

Twitter did not explain publicly why Apple users are being charged more money, but there have been media reports that the company is looking for ways to offset fees charged in Apple’s popular App Store.

Twitter had initially launched Twitter Blue in November before pausing it as fake accounts exploded on the social media platform. Twitter Blue was then scheduled to launch again on November 29 but that date was pushed back until now.

Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter for $44 billion U.S. in October of this year and took the company private, has complained about Apple in a series of recent tweets, grumbling about the 30% fee that Apple charges software developers for in-app purchases.

Musk has also claimed that Apple stopped advertising on Twitter. In response, Apple chief executive officer (CEO) Tim Cook said there has been a misunderstanding about Twitter and vowed to be one of the social media company’s biggest advertisers going forward.

Apple’s stock is down 22% this year at $142.16 U.S. per share.
