Twitter Begins Rollout Of Edit Button

Social media giant Twitter (TWTR) is rolling out an edit button that will allow users to alter or remove a tweet after it is sent.

Twitter said that some users may start seeing edited tweets in their feed because it is testing an edit button that has the long been called for by users of the platform.

In a blog post, the company said edited tweets are being tested internally and that the feature would expand to subscribers of its paid Twitter Blue service later in September.

The edit feature will first be made available to Twitter Blue subscribers in New Zealand, with Australia, Canada and the U.S. following later this fall, according to the San Francisco-based company.

Although users have for years called on Twitter to add an edit button, which social media rivals such as Facebook (META) and Instagram already offer, others have raised concerns about the potential implications of such a feature.

Online safety experts have provided an example where a harmless tweet might be edited and manipulated to include harassment or misinformation.

Twitter stock is down 10% this year and currently trading at $38.63 a share.

Twitter said in its blog post that tweets will be able to be edited “a few times” for up to 30 minutes after they are posted.

Edited tweets will appear with an icon, label, and timestamp to make it obvious that they have been modified, and users can click through to a tweet’s edit history to see past versions of the messages.

“We’re intentionally testing Edit Tweet with a smaller group to help us incorporate feedback while identifying and resolving potential issues,” Twitter said in its blog post.
