Google (GOOGL) has added Truth Social, the social media app backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, to its Play Store.
The decision means that Truth Social, which is a clone of Twitter (TWTR), can now be downloaded to Android smartphones via Google’s app store.
Google said it added Truth Social to its Play Store after the social media company agreed to implement stronger content moderation policies.
Google had previously said that Truth Social could not appear in its app store until it addressed the extreme conservative views and threats of violence made by its users.
Google also insists that social media apps on the Play Store provide an in-app system for reporting objectionable content.
Under Truth Social’s policies, user content that encourages violence “may result in” that content, or the account behind the content, being removed from the social media platform.
Donald Trump launched Truth Social to communicate with his supporters after Twitter banned the former president following the January 6, 2021 riot that took place on Capitol Hill.
There is now speculation that Elon Musk might allow Trump back on Twitter once his purchase of that social media platform is completed in the coming weeks.
The stock of Google parent company Alphabet (GOOGL) is down 33% year-to-date and trading at $97.56 U.S. per share.
