Amazon (AMZN) has ordered its employees to return to the office at least three days a week.
Amazon chief executive officer (CEO) Andy Jassy made the announcement in an all-staff memo. The new directive for employees to be back in the office takes effect on May 1 of this year.
The change marks an end to the remote work policy that had been in place at Amazon since the pandemic began in March 2020. It also comes a month after Amazon confirmed plans to layoff 18,000 workers amid an economic slowdown.
In the memo, Jassy argued that in-person work leads to better collaboration and company culture. He also said that in-person work will boost local economies where Amazon’s offices are located.
Amazon’s stock is down 35% over the past year at $97.20 U.S. per share.
